PROPERTY IN TARGOVISHTE
The town of Targovishte is settled at 170 meters above the sea level and has 47556 inhabitants. It is 330 km. north – east of Sofia, 40 km. west of Shoumen, 25 km. north – west of Veliki Preslav and at 100 km. north – east of Veliko Tarnovo. The city is near to the country border points of Varna (110 km. far) and Rousse (100km. far) and that fact makes it a natural strategic crossroads The town of Targovishte is a regional and municipal center in the south-east of Bulgaria . It is situated in the fertile and picturesque Danubian plain. HISTORY
The archeological data show that there has been a certain human existence at that places even during the copper and stone epoch (halkolyt) - V-IV millenium BC. Remains of antiquity of Thracian settlements (V - IV century BC), a settlement from the Roman epoch (V - III century AD) and a fortress from the Early Byzantine epoch (V - VI century) have been discovered in the surroundings of the town. A settlement from the First Bulgarian country, a settlement and a fortress from the Second Bulgarian country have been discovered. Since 1573 in the taxation register of the Ottoman Empire the old name of the settlement - Eski Dzhumaya is encountered for the first time. In 1658 it becomes an administrative center. The influence of the European culture and the eagerness for knowledge give grounds for an alert educational activity. Since OV??? century a monastery school has been established here, which has been reconstructed into a non-clerical one in 1846. The eminent representative of the Bulgarian National Revival, Petko R. Slaveykov used to be a teacher in it. During that time a Christian church and a cultural club have been built up in the town. During the period of the Revival Targovishte keeps its fame of a center of fairs and crafts. A great number of crafts flourish - manufacture of homespun, manufacture of goats-hair products, braid manufacture, shoemaker's industry and others. The town has its own place in the national movement for liberation. In 1872 Angel Kanchev establishes a secret revolutionary committee. The leaders of the Bulgarian National Revival Sava Gerenov and Sava Katrafilov become initiators of education and progress. Here is the birthplace of Nikola Simov - Kuruto - a color-bearer of Botev's band. During the Russian-Turkish war of Liberation the people of Eski Dzhumaya defend bravely their town and do not allow the bashi-bazouk to set it on fire on his retreat. They live to see the freedom in the cold 9 January 1878 . In 1934 the town was renamed Targovishte. There has been resumed the traditional fair in Targovishte known as the Spring Fair and Industrial Goods Expo.
CULTURAL LANDMARKS
There are more than 30 buildings of interesting architecture in the old Renaissance quarter called “Varosh”. Among them are the school named “St. St. Kiril and Methdii” where Spiridon Gramadov and Petko Slaveikov were teachers. At present the building houses the Museum of History The National Archive treasures 114 866 archival entities. It has specialized base and fund depositories in the town of Targovishte . The big building of cultural club “Napredak” is situated in the very center of the town. The amateur art activities groups - ballet formation “Targovishte”, Children's musical school, Theater studio are located in it. SURROUNDING AREAS
The Targoviste spring is located 8 km. south – west of the town. The temperature of the mineral water is 27oC, and the water debit is about 6 litter per second. There is a regular bus line to the town. In the immediate vicinity of the town is the interesting Hunting park, the Yukya forest – park, the Borovo oko lake, and 7 km. away is the Park in the Targovishte gorge. The Roman bridge is situated some 60 km. south – west of Targovishte between the villages of Viadanovo and Malko Dolyane, above the Stara river. In spite of its name it does not date back to Roman times. It was built in 16 th – 17 th centuries. It is 60 meters long, 4 meters wide and the top – point height is 10 meters. The Garbatata fountain is located (50 meters) away from the above mentioned Stara river, some 75 km. south – west of Targovishte and some 25 km. west of Antonovo. It is natural limestone rock in itself, some 4 meters high and having the shape of an arc.
